tea pet

A tea pet is a small sculpture most often made from clay, originating in Chinese tea culture, that enhances the tea-drinking experience. You're probably not going to feed your dog or cat tea, but you can feed tea to a tea pet! The sculpture — often a kind of animal — is placed on a tray, and "fed" by pouring tea over it. Over time, the tea changes a clay tea pet's color, texture, and scent, providing a sense of continuity and harmony: a well-loved tea pet is proof you know your tea!

Some tea pet collectors keep separate tea pets for separate types of tea, to maintain consistent characteristics.
